Will I Sound Different with Braces?

Patients often ask if braces will affect their speech. While movies and TV shows exaggerate this, the reality is less dramatic. Braces do not cause a permanent lisp. However, untreated malocclusion can lead to speech issues.
Temporary Speech Changes
Braces might temporarily alter your speech as your mouth adjusts to the new appliance. You may experience a slight lisp, especially with “s” and “th” sounds. A 2016 study found that 56% of patients noticed some speech changes, which varied in severity. These changes are usually temporary and linked to the severity of your bite issues.
Types of Braces and Speech Impact
- Metal and Ceramic Braces: These can cause slight speech changes because they can change the position of your lips and tongue.
- Clear Aligners: Thinner and removable, but some patients still report temporary speech issues.
Overcoming Speech Issues
- Speak Slowly & Overenunciate: Focus on forming sounds correctly to adapt faster.
- Practice Speaking: Read aloud, sing, or practice in front of a mirror to get used to your braces.
- Be Patient: Your mouth will adapt, and your speech will return to normal.
